From thermal management to electromagnetic shielding, our metal back PCBs provide enhanced functionality for a wide range of applications, ensuring reliability and longevity in demanding environments.

What Are Metal Back PCBs?

Metal back PCBs, also known as metal core PCBs or MCPCBs, feature a metal core layer, typically aluminium or copper, sandwiched between layers of dielectric material and copper traces. This metal core provides excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical stability, making metal back PCBs ideal for applications requiring efficient heat dissipation and structural integrity.
Multlayer Metal Core example
Double sided Metal core example
This configuration features multiple conductive layers separated by a thermal dielectric material. At the bottom lies the metal base.
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) components are exclusively placed on one side.
Through-Hole Technology (THT) components are not supported, but the structure offers the capability to create blind and buried vias within internal signal layers and power/ground planes.
It comprises of dual copper layers with the metal core sandwiched in between.
Plated Through Holes (PTH) serve to connect these copper layers, facilitating the placement of Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and Through-Hole Technology (THT) components on either side.
Technical Elements of Metal Back PCBs:

-
Thermal Management: The metal core in metal back PCBs acts as a highly efficient heat sink, dissipating heat away from heat-generating components such as LEDs, power semiconductors, and high-power devices. This helps to maintain optimal operating temperatures and prolong the lifespan of sensitive components.
-
Electromagnetic Shielding: The metal core in metal back PCBs provides electromagnetic shielding, minimizing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and improving signal integrity in sensitive electronic systems. This makes metal back PCBs suitable for applications where EMI protection is critical, such as medical devices, automotive electronics, and industrial equipment.
-
Mechanical Stability: The metal core enhances the mechanical stability and rigidity of metal back PCBs, providing added strength and durability compared to traditional PCBs. This makes them suitable for applications subjected to mechanical stress, vibration, and shock.
-
High Power Capability: Metal back PCBs are capable of handling high-power applications, thanks to their efficient thermal management and enhanced heat dissipation properties. This makes them ideal for high-power LED lighting, automotive power electronics, and power supplies.
-
Design Flexibility: Despite their metal core, metal back PCBs offer design flexibility, allowing for custom layouts, complex geometries, and integration of components directly onto the metal core for streamlined assembly and reduced manufacturing costs.
